Tokyo, Japan (Sports Network) - Second-seeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues posted a first-round win, while sixth-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer was a second-round loser Wednesday at the $175,000 Japan Open Tennis Championships.
Medina Garrigues setup a second-rounder with Aussie Samantha Stosur by overcoming Taipei's Yung-Jan Chan 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 on Day 3 at Ariake Colosseum. Stosur got past Vania King 6-2, as the American qualifier retired after the first set, citing a right hamstring injury.
Meanwhile, Peer was sent packing by Slovakian lucky-loser Jarmila Gajdosova 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7).
Two other second-round matches saw fifth-seeded Estonian Kaia Kanepi come back to beat Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 and seventh-seeded Thai Tamarine Tanasugarn trounce France's Camille Pin 6-2, 6-2.
Top-seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki will battle Japanese favorite Ayumi Morita in a second-rounder here on Thursday.
The 2008 Japan Open champion will collect $28,000.
