Henin cruises into second round at Indian Wells

Indian Wells, CA (Sports Network) - Former world No. 1 Justine Henin was among Wednesday's first-round winners at the $4.5 million BNP Paribas Open tennis event.

Henin drilled Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-2 at the beautiful Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The Belgian was playing her first tennis since losing to Serena Williams in the Aussie Open final.

The 27-year-old Henin titled here in 2004.

Russian Anna Chakvetadze battled back from a set down to defeat Brit Anne Keothavong 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. Chakvetadze won despite committing 10 double faults in the match.

Americans Jill Craybas and Vania King each won their first-round matches. Craybas beat Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 6-0, 7-5, while King handled fellow countrywoman Christina McHale 7-5, 6-3.

Additional first-round wins came for Belarusian Olga Govortsova, Aussie Alicia Molik, Russian Vera Dushevina, Kimiko Date Krumm of Japan, Slovak Polona Hercog, Swiss Patty Schnyder, Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand, Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium, Brit Elena Baltacha, Sorana Cirstea of Romania, Peng Shuai of China, and Virginie Razzano of France.

There are 32 seeded women this week, all of whom received opening-round byes. The top seeds are French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, U.S. Open runner- up Caroline Wozniacki, two-time major finalist Elena Dementieva, Belarusian slugger Victoria Azarenka and former top-ranked star Jelena Jankovic.

This week's field also features former world No. 1 Belgian stars Kim Clijsters and Henin, who are also both former titlists here in the California desert.

Vera Zvonareva bested 2008 Indian Wells champ Ana Ivanovic in last year's finale here.

The 2010 Indian Wells winner will earn a hefty $700,000.
