Indian Wells, CA (Sports Network) - World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki had to play only three games on Thursday before reaching the semifinals at the $4.5 million BNP Paribas Open.
The 2010 Indian Wells runner-up was leading eighth-seeded Victoria Azarenka 3-0 in the first set of their quarterfinal match when the Belarusian retired with a hip injury. Wozniacki and Azarenka are good friends and hugged each other at the net after their brief battle on Day 9.
Wozniacki lost to Serbian star Jelena Jankovic in last year's championship match here in the California desert.
By reaching the semifinals in her fourth straight event, the 20-year-old Wozniacki guaranteed that she will remain atop the rankings through the upcoming Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.
Wozniacki's semifinal opponent Friday on the hardcourts at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden will be 16th-seeded Russian Maria Sharapova or unseeded surprise Chinese Peng Shuai. The former top-ranked and three-time major champion Sharapova titled here back in 2006.
The other semifinal will pit 15th-seeded Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli against 23rd-seeded Belgian slugger Yanina Wickmayer. Bartoli is a former Wimbledon runner-up.
The 2011 Indian Wells champ will collect $700,000.
