Indian Wells, CA (Sports Network) - Former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic and eighth-seeded Samantha Stosur were both straight-set quarterfinal victors Thursday at the $4.5 million BNP Paribas Open.
The sixth-seeded Serbian Jankovic moved into the semifinals at this top-flight hardcourt event with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over 23rd-seeded Russian Alisa Kleybanova at the beautiful Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Jankovic prevailed in 1 hour, 42 minutes with the help of three service breaks against the 20-year-old Kleybanova, who captured her first career WTA Tour title in Malaysia three weeks ago. Jankovic also beat Kleybanova in a Fed Cup match last month.
The 25-year-old Jankovic, a former U.S. Open runner-up, will now appear in her first semifinal in five tournaments so far this season.
Jankovic will next face Stosur of Australia, who beat 28th-seeded Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) in 1 hour, 35 minutes.
Stosur's previous best showing this season came at the Australian Open, where she lost to Serena Williams in the fourth round.
Jankovic and Stosur have met twice before, with the Serbian winning both of those matches.
The other semi, which was determined here on Wednesday, will pit second-seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki against fifth-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska.
The 2010 Indian Wells winner will earn $700,000.
